Caption Wallie V. Funk [Sr.]
Description Wallie Valentine Funk [Sr.] as a young boy in a large lace collar standing next to a chair. [Note: Wallie Funk [Sr.] never used Sr. as part of his name; it is used here solely to distinguish him from his son.] He was born on 8-8-1892, in the Vendome Hotel to Barbara and Valentine Funk, grew up in Anacortes, served in WWI, and purchased the Wilson Hotel in 1916. The 1-6-1916, ANACORTES AMERICAN reported, "The New Wilson in New Hands. Purchased from Cohen and Sheedy by Wallie Funk, son of V. Funk, owner of the building." Wallie married Gladys Irene Brown on 6-6-1921. They had three sons: Wallie V. Funk, born in 1922, James Funk, 1925, and Charles Funk, 1927. Wallie Funk [Sr.] built the Paramount Theater at 801 Commercial in 1929 (see WF 1122); he lost the building during the Great Depression of the 1930s, as well as the family home. They moved to Lake Campbell in the summer of 1931. Wallie Funk [Sr.] operated the Pay N' Sav Grocery in the Wilson Building in 1932 for a few year (see WF 3397). He worked in the Wilson Hotel until his retirement, (see WF 3398) and died on 12-4-1955, in a Seattle hospital at the age of 63; his obituary is in the 12-5-1955 ANACORTES BULLETIN.
