Caption Cat-putter-outer contest - Dybbro, Luvera, Burton
Description The Cat-putter-outer Contest was conceived by Anacortes merchant Paul Luvera and attracted nationwide attention. Participants had to race to wind the clock, get up, put on slippers, make sure nightcap was on, throw the cat out the back door, and then get back into bed. Paul Dybbro, Paul Luvera, and Phil Burton are shown in beds in this view on 7th Street between Commercial and Q. The Keystone (Moyer) Building is visible behind the doors. On the bottom floor is Eba's Mutual Grocery which was in business between c. 1937 and 1939; it was not listed in the 1940 directory. This contest was reprised for the 1957 Marineers' Pageant. At that contest, Luvera, Burton and Dybbro joined on the sidelines and cheered on the winner, Hank Biesheuval. See also WF 5903, 5904. The 1939 "Pa, Go Put the Cat Out!" contest was filmed by Universal Newsreel and was shown on newsreels throughout the U. S. in movie houses with this advertisement: "This cat-putter-out derby draws the cream of the experts as they compete for the championship. You're disqualified if, by chance, you happen to wind the cat and put out the alarm clock."
