Caption LUVERA, Paul and Nicola
Description Paul Luvera and his father, Nicola, are dressed in their "Luvera Grocery" attire.Paul Luvera was born in Reggio, Calabria, Italy, to Nicola and Fillippa Luvera, in 1898. The family came to Anacortes in 1918, and Paul opened Luvera Fruits in 1922. Nicola worked with him in the store, later called Luvera's Grocery. In 1926, Paul Luvera married Mary Babarovich, and they had three children: Phyllis Luvera Ennes, Anita Luvera Mayer, and Paul Jr. Luvera served as a State Senator from 1952 to 1957. Following his retirement from the grocery business in 1957, Luvera carved totem poles of animal and human figures and wrote a book titled "How to Carve Totem Poles." This image was published in the November 17, 1932 ANACORTES AMERICAN article, "Luvera and Company celebrate founding."
