Caption Stumps of Old Town 1890
Description View of Anacortes - 1890. Recently cut forest is marked by stumps; construction underway on Ave P; Anacortes Hotel [8th and J] may be seen at far right [Hotel finished 7/31/1890 according to ANACORTES AMERICAN.] Bowman Hotel on Rose Pt. visible at center, rear (burned in 1891); Ocean Dock (Oregon Improvement Company) with vessel tied up at right. Springboard holes visible in stumps, foreground. The ANACORTES PROGRESS on 2/8/1890 called for "200 axeman to clear the east end of the city." By March 1 work was well underway as this NEW YORK SUN writer observed: "All boats leave the place at night at present. Viewed from their decks as they move away, the town looks like a city just destroyed, rather than one just beginning to build up. A line of fire in blazing brush heaps, stumps and logs skirts the shore for nearly two miles and through the lurid light, the huge giant firs of the yet unsubdued forest seem to dance and totter like the ghosts of those the fire is slowly consuming." Hotel is also visible in WF 0041,0044, 0045.
