Caption 1939 Marineer Pageant Pirate Girls & Ray Galyean
Description This is one of ten publicity photos that Ferd Brady took of the six Marineer Pirate Girls. The 7-13-1939 ANACORTES AMERICAN reported, "Pirate Girls have pictures taken." The article stated, "Anacortes Marineers' Pageant Pirate Girls, ambassadors of good will for the coming celebration, posed before the camera of Ferd Brady Tuesday afternoon for a number of publicity photos that will be used in Seattle and Northwest newspapers for publicity purposes." The 7-18-1939 ANACORTES DAILY MERCURY identified the people, left to right, as LaVerne Baer, Florence Thurston, Margaret Thurston, Ray (Two-Ton) Galyean, Marguerite Thomas, Betty Wagner, and Ruth Henwood. Some of these girls later contended for the Marineers' Pageant crown. A young boy, who is watching the photo shoot, apparently in Indian costume, is at the far right next to the car. These pictures show girls in "shorts and middies" at Causland Par "in training" for the Pageant's walkathon event; see WF 1426. The girls are posing with Raymond Galyean, whom the ANACORTES AMERICAN reported was "of the city." The Galyean family was listed in the 1937 Anacortes Directory. Raymond V. Galyean's occupation was listed as "station operator" at Galyean's Gas Station, 501 Commercial. The gas station was run by Auda and Stella Galyean, probably his parents. By 1940 the family's service station had moved to 18th and Commercial; see WF 1220 for photo of gas station at 501 Commercial. For additional photos of the Pirate Girls at Causland Park, see WF 1578-1581.
