Caption Goodwin-Benedict-Havekost building
Description The Goodwin-Benedict-Havekost buildings located at 510 Commercial Avenue, on the west side of the street. The building was constructed in 1890 by Tonjes H. Havekost, and two men named Benjamin Goodwin and H.M. Benedict. The 11-27-1890, ANACORTES AMERICAN reported, "Foundation of the Goodwin-Benedict-Havekost Block completed and brick work commenced." The 1-22-1891 issue reported, "Goodwin-Benedict-Havekost block completed." Fred Etter's Barbershop may be seen in left storefront. Etter started his business here c. 1917 and was listed through the 1937 directory, but not in the 1939 directory. Matt Kingsley's insurance business is located just north of Etter's barbershop. The 1-22-1931 paper reported, "Matt Kingsley buys insurance business." Thereafter Kingsley was listed at 510 Commercial through the 1948 city directory, but not in the 1954 directory. Kingsley died on 10-24-1962. Hansen's Electrical Shop is located in the north storefront of this building, but no listing is found in the city directories available in the museum. Note the sign for A. F. of L. Cannery Workers local hanging over the center archway. The office was probably located upstairs. The AFL local was on listed in the 1934 directory; in 1937 it was housed in the Wells Building; in 1939 it was in the Empire (Medical-Dental) Building. Snyder's Pharmacy is visible of the north edge of building. The brick facade on the front of the building was plastered over c. 1945-46 due to the deteriorating brick. See WF 0267. For numerous views of the building, see WF 1231-1233 and Marineers' Pageant parade photos, beginning at WF 1427. This structure underwent a major renovation from 2002-2003.
