Caption WHITNEY, Kate Bradley
Description Portrait series of Kate [Bradley] Whitney, born c.1855; her father was V. L. Bradley; her brother was R. Lee Bradley, owner of the Anacortes Mercantile [see WF 1211]. The Bradley family came to Washington from Missouri in 1862 and settled on Whidbey Island near Oak harbor, where they lived until 1870 when they moved to Stanwood. She went to University of Washington in 1875-1876. She married widower Rienzi Whitney in 1979 and lived on the Padilla Flats. [see WF 0758]. Whitney had settled on the Padilla Flats in 1872 following his arrival from California. Whitney, together with his cousins E. Sisson and A. Tillinghast, were responsible for diking the southern end of Padilla Bay to create acres of rich farmland. [In 1890, the Great Northern Railroad named their stop on the flats Whitney Station, in honor of the family. See photo of family members on Padilla Flats, WF 0758]. Whitney's first wife, Augusta, died in 1877 and he married Kate the next year. The family moved to Anacortes in 1890, settling in the former Tade Alden Academy on 32nd Street [see WF 0025]. That home was razed in 1907 and a new home built for the family. [see "an old landmark disappears," ANACORTES AMERICAN, September 5, 1907]. Rienzi became an important civic leader and member of the Anacortes City Council. His untimely death at age 51, following a carriage accident, came as a great shock to the community. Kate Whitney served as Anacortes School Clerk and, in 1907, the director of School District 18. Whitney Elementary School was named in his honor. [Whitney School: see WF 2585]. Two of Kate and Rienzi's daughters, Helen and Edna, became the "best known and loved" of Anacortes school teachers.
