Object Name Gyrocompass
Description This gyrocompass is reputed to have hugn from the top of Captain Haugen's bed so he could see it first thing in the morning to know what the ship was doing. The dictionary defines gyrocompass as "a navigational instrument in which a gyroscope maintians a pointer's N-S orientation." Likewise, as gyroscope is "a spinning disk or wheel whose spin axis maintains its angular orientation when not subject to external torques."
