Catalog Number 2005.025.018
Object Name Bottle, Apothecary
Description Colbalt blue bottle marked "Bromo Seltzer, Emerson Drug Co., Baltimore". Patented in 1889, always used cobalt blue bottles. Blue glass has a particular eye-appeal, is made by adding cobalt to copper to the basic recipe of sand, soda and lime. Colored glass was more expensive to produce, so it is found less commonly in medicine bottles than the natural aqua color. Bromo-Seltzer, made by the Emerson Drug Company formed by Capt. Isaac Emerson, was quite successful. Was headquartered in Baltimore.
